It is the form of percussion instrument known as circle or tambourine in Classical Turkish Music and especially Mevlevi praise music, peculiar to maghrib countries (mainly to Morocco and Algeria). The name of “bendir” derived from maghrib arabic language has commonly used in Turkey after 1980s.

The instrument have been used in the medivial European music with the name timbre or tymbre (French) since 12th century. It is most likely that the Arabic name of the instrument is derived from that in French.
