Caucasian Folk Dances have had a very important place in the daily life of Caucasian people for centuries. Dance is a part of life at wedding ceremonies, bairams, festivals at home, hosting - seeing off, winter and summer nights, friend meetings. Dances were performed but sometimes forgotten. Then, new ones superseded the old ones by changing the meaning and style, but they never lost their importance in Caucasian life. Ethnographic history of some dances dates back the ancient times. For example, after the acceptance of Islam, it was the dance performed by those who were saying goodbye to their beloved by getting round before going to Gazavat. Today, it is called as “WUIG” or “SIMD” and has become the dance first performed at the opening of the wedding ceremonies. The whole character of the Caucasians can be seen in the Caucasian Folk Dances. We can see the respect for the women in the serious, prideful and balanced motions while dancing with a woman. We can observe the agile, austere and martial character of the Caucasians as well as their aesthetic behaviors and bravery while they are with their fellows.
